“Some of you are walking love letters.”
I read that recently (on LinkedIn of all places! 😮) and it stuck with me.
Humans as walking love letters.
Whoa.
How amazing that some folks are walking love letters in this world, sharing love wherever they go. Helping people. Lifting folks up. Energizing them.
Like this singer I met recently (Eugenie Jones, a speaker at a Creative Mornings event: check here for a free Creative Mornings in your area) who said: “My goal is for people — when they leave me — to have more than they came with.”
More than they came with. Oh yeah. Fist bump. That’s a good goal.
But Wait a Minute, Dawg
How the heck are we going to be walking love letters in this extra-special Age of Avarice and Stupidity?
We all know anybody could be a walking love letter IF:
There wasn’t so much strife and turmoil in the U.S. (and caused by the U.S.) right now.
If most of us didn’t have to go to an insufferable job that drains our soul every day
If we all had more money, more rest, more time … well, imagine how much love we could give then!
But nope that’s not the way to look at it at all.
Nosiree, Bob.
Try this one on for size:
Because America is a hot mess like 2007 Britney Spears, walking love letters are EXACTLY who we should be now.
Walking love letters are exactly what we need for us, by us, to us. It’s the greatest flippin’ gift we could all give ourselves as a society!
And yes, it’s who we could be.
But we’ll all need to be brave to have that much love and give it. We’ll have to be daring. And willing to risk. (And I know those things are hard.)
First, Imagine This Feeling
I want you to imagine other people being walking letters of love moving through this world.
Close your eyes and picture it.
See in your mind the folks around you every day — not just your loved ones (who may already love like this) but your neighbors, strangers, even government officials. The lady in the elevator. 70% of the people at the coffee shop, waiting for their mochas and their lattes.
Imagine what that kind of ominipresent love would look like, what you would see, and what you would feel.
Imagine this, too: What if you clicked open your favorite social app and instead of story after story about violence and cruelty, you read and saw your neighbors helping each other? What if you constantly saw strangers pitching in and generally doing good in the world?
What if you stopped seeing hate mail and instead saw love letters all the time?
And get this, although it’s insane to think of right now: imagine you’re in a lonely and dark parking garage, heading to your car, when a man suddenly appears …
But instead of tensing and quickening your pace, imagine if you felt relief and thought, “Oh good, a protector is here.” And he actually was a good guy.
And imagine if they were everywhere.
Wild right?
Maybe It’s Worth a Try?
I don’t know how we get there (or if we can get there) but I do know that what we have right now is not working well for the U.S. or humanity.
So maybe we should try some baby steps.
Small steps away from this alienation, this distance, this downer dance of depression that we are doing in the world — and bringing the world down with us. This dance that only sees the walking hate letters out there right now. Always girds for the attack. The cycle that the media amplifies and social media prioritizes.
Maybe we should instead take steps toward the society we want.
None of this widespread anger is working out so good for humanity right now. So maybe we should all try to be walking love letters for the people in our lives. Those we know … and those we are just meeting now.
Even if it hurts. Even if it’s hard. Even if it’s not cool.
Because, remember:
Imagine what would happen if we just all decided to try.
And if you’re already a walking love letter? THANK YOU.

My Irrational Hatred of Little Libraries Has Ended
·I’m going to confess that sometimes I have hated Little Libraries.
Trying sister! I can easily for a small handful and people in general. The idea of loving a certain brand of cult members is very hard and I’ve only been able to in the abstract. I’ll keep trying but I’d rather it dissolve and then I wake up to Barbie world🤪☮️
